Scope and Content View from south of Savoy Croft, No 3 Savoy Park, Ayr, South Ayrshire Savoy Croft was built in 1893 to designs by architect James A Morris (1857-1942). This Arts and Crafts style villa, with its asymmetrical design details was built as the architect's own home. The finely-crafted interior and exterior woodwork and stonework reflects Morris's love of craftsmanship. This shows the entrance front of the house. The prominent Dutch-gabled advanced bay (right) has an asymmetrical entrance area, with a corner buttress (left) and small square windows (right). A string-course divides the two storeys on the main section of the house (left) with overhanging eaves shading the upper windows. James A Morris was a man of varied interests. His love of traditional Scottish buildings can be seen in his architectural designs, and in his campaign for the preservation of the Auld Brig of Ayr. He also wrote articles on the poet Robert Burns, and established the Scottish Society of Art Workers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
