Scope and Content Banking Hall, National Bank of Scotland, No 47 St Vincent Street and Nos 131-5 Buchanan Street, Glasgow (now the Post Office) The National Bank of Scotland, a giant Neo-Baroque palazzo which stands on the corner of St Vincent Street and Buchanan Street, was designed in 1898-1900 by the architect, John More Dick Peddie. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1901. This impressive square banking hall, lined by paired marble Ionic columns, is lit from above by a glazed coffered ceiling and a large central glass dome. The highly polished, sloping desks of the ledger clerks are illuminated by elegant electric light fittings, one of the new technologies of the time. The National Bank of Scotland was established in 1825. It grew rapidly, opening a large number of branches throughout Scotland, and in 1864, became the first Scottish bank to open a branch in London. From 1881 to 1914, in terms of liabilities, deposits and advances, it was second only to the Bank of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
