Scope and Content Board Room, British Linen Company Bank, Nos 38-9 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh (now the Bank of Scotland) The head office of the British Linen Company Bank was designed in 1846 in the grandest possible style and on a colossal scale by the architect, David Bryce. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1896 on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the bank. The board room has oak dado panelling and oak pedimented doorcases flanking a grey marble chimneypiece. The ceiling is compartmented, with an elaborate dentilled and modillioned cornice, and the furnishings include a mahogany board table and red leather-covered chairs. The portrait above the chimneypiece is of James, 2nd Duke of Abercorn, governor of the bank from 1893-1913, and was painted by Hubert von Herkomer as part of the celebration of the bank's 150th anniversary in 1896. For the staff, the occasion was marked by the issue of a bonus. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
