Scope and Content Drawing Room, Kilnside House, Seedhill Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Kilnside House, a large mansion built c.1836, was altered and extended in the 1880s for Stewart Clark, a partner in Clark & Company, the Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. This richly decorated room, a classic case of Victorian clutter, has every available surface arrayed with potted plants and objects d'art. The fireplace is draped in tasselled material, furnishings include exotic feathered fans and tortoise footstools, and the room is lit by a magnificent cut-glass chandelier. Throughout the Victorian era most houses were lit by candles, oil or gas. In grand houses, candlelight was often preferred in drawing rooms, and elaborate wall sconces, bracket candlesticks, and huge cut-glass chandeliers were considered the height of luxury.
