Scope and Content Unidentified Room, Kilnside House, Seedhill Road, Paisley, Renfewshire (now demolished) Kilnside House, a large mansion built c.1836, was altered and extended in the 1880s for Stewart Clark, a partner in Clark & Company, the Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. This room is possibly a small studio or landing. The walls are hung with paintings, and the chest of drawers (left) displays a collection of Classical-style vases. The low seating (right) provides a good point for viewing the pictures, and the single teasel in the vase (right) completes the artistic picture. Clark & Company were a prosperous firm of cotton threadmakers, operating from Seedhill Mills and employing thousands of local workers. Most of the factory output was for the home market, but the company also had a large mill in New Jersey where they manufactured cotton thread for the United States market.
