Scope and Content Bedroom, Kilnside House, Seedhill Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Kilnside House, a large mansion built c.1836, was altered and extended in the 1880s for Stewart Clark, a partner in Clark & Company, the Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. The bedroom has a wooden chimneypiece with pretty patterned tiles lining the grate, and a mirrored overmantel with an array of little shelves displaying ornaments. The four-poster bed, possibly a relic of earlier times, has heavy damask curtains with velvet tie-backs trimmed with tassels. Victorian bedrooms were furnished with a bed, wardrobe, washstand and dressing table. Here the main feature is the canopied four-poster bed which, by the mid-1800s, had been generally replaced by the more typical open-style bed although wealthier homes often kept the canopy.
