Scope and Content Conservatory, Gallowhill House, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Gallowhill House, a large mansion designed in 1867 by the Glasgow architects, James Salmon & Son, was the home of Peter Kerr of Clark & Company, a large firm of Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. This wooden-framed conservatory is filled with a collection of ferns, palms, climbers and other tropical plants. The walls have small panes of attractive painted glass that form a band running below the roof, and the floor is covered with decorative encaustic tiles laid in a geometric pattern. The conservatory was an indoor garden for the collection of exotic plants, a popular Victorian pastime, and was often designed to show off the owner's newly discovered plants in the most flattering surroundings. Seats amongst the foliage allowed privacy for reading, lounging or taking light refreshment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
