Scope and Content Dining Room, Gallowhill House, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Gallowhill House, a large mansion designed in 1867 by the Glasgow architects, James Salmon & Son, was the home of Peter Kerr of Clark & Company, a large firm of Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. This magnificent room has dark dado panelling, and elaborate pediments above the six-panelled doors on each side of the fireplace. The ceiling is compartmented, and the heavy embossed frieze is in 'Lincrusta' or some similar material. The room is lit by gas wall brackets and an ornate gasolier over the dining table. Apart from the tables and chairs, the Victorian dining room had a sideboard, a massive piece of furniture often embellished with carved decorations and fitted with an overmirror, drawers and cabinets. At dinner parties most dishes were placed on the sideboard, and served from there. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
