Scope and Content Dining Room, Gallowhill House, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Gallowhill House, a large mansion designed in 1867 by the Glasgow architects, James Salmon & Son, was the home of Peter Kerr of Clark & Company, a large firm of Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. The dining room has dark dado panelling and a six-panelled door with an elaborate pediment above. The heavily embossed frieze is in 'Lincrusta' or some similar 'leather paper' material, and the dark wallcovering between dado and frieze forms the perfect background for a collection of gilt-framed paintings. The room is lit by brass gas wall brackets, with an elaborate central gasolier over the table. Candelabra (complete with shades on the candles), however, were still used as they provided an atmospheric light which the Victorians considered the most suitable for dining.
