Scope and Content Gallowhill House, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Gallowhill House, a large mansion in a commanding position to the north-east of Paisley, was designed in 1867 by the Glasgow firm of architects, James Salmon & Son, for Peter Kerr, a Paisley threadmaker. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1890. This rambling, two-storeyed house is designed in a French Baronial style with a square, four-storeyed tower and an impressive entrance porch. The principal rooms are bay-windowed, and corbelled oriels denote the main rooms on the upper floor. The Kerr family were old-established Paisley threadmakers once famous for their 'nine-cord thread'. The family business was eventually absorbed into the firm of Clark & Company, hugely successful cotton thread manufacturers who employed thousands of the town's workers, and had a factory outlet in America.
