Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Gallowhill House, Paisley, Renfrewshire (now demolished) Gallowhill House, a large mansion designed in 1867 by the Glasgow architects, James Salmon & Son, was the home of Peter Kerr of Clark & Company, a large firm of Paisley threadmakers. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890. The hall has a panelled dado, and panelled doors with elaborate pediments or 'overdoors' leading to the principal rooms. The walls are decorated with a series of painted panels (those on the left wall depict figures), and a frieze paper with additional stencilling. The room is lit by a gas lantern and gas wall brackets. Throughout the Victorian period it was the convention to consider walls as being made up of three basic elements: dado, infilling (the area between the dado and frieze) and frieze. Dado panelling was often found in halls, and in Scotland in particular, stencilled decoration remained popular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
