Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows the smallest of the three engines, which had apparently been installed to drive some machinery directly. In 1969 it was not clear what machinery had been driven or how it had been driven. The engine is of a simple design. The main Douglas and Grant driving engine was kept as a standby in 1969, and was still in good condition, It was scrapped in about 1970. The third engine drove a generator supplying electricity to the works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
