Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows the generating station for the works in the centre, with part of the engine-house for the main driving engine on the left, and the retaining wall of the cooling pond for the condenser water of the large engine. The main Douglas and Grant driving engine was kept as a standby in 1969, and was still in good condition, It was scrapped in about 1970. Of the other two engines one, in this house, drove a generator, and the other had driven machinery directly. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
