Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows a small dynamo supplying electricity to the mill, driven by a belt from a lineshaft powered by a small horizontal steam engine. This dynamo was a standby to a larger machine, part of which can be seen on the left. This installation was kept as a standby in 1969, and was in immaculate condition, as can be seen here. The use of a horizontal engine to generate electricity was rare by the 1960s, vertical high-speed engines being more normal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
