Scope and Content Gairie Works (Garie Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This works was founded in 1868 by members of the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging. In 1969 it was still making narrow jute fabric, and had some fine heavy calenders and mangles. There were also two stationary steam engines, recently disused. This shows the larger of the stationary steam engines, built in 1916 by Douglas & Grant of Kirkcaldy. It is a tandem compound drop-valve engine, seen in this view from the flywheel end, with the low-pressure cylinder nearest to the camera, with two of its drop valve son top of the cylinder. A tandem compound engine has two cylinders end to end, the exhaust steam from the high-pressure cylinder being used in the low pressure cylinder before being condensed into water. The air pump keeps the condenser clear of air which would stop the engine working. This engine was scrapped in about 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
