Scope and Content Bridge, Pollok House, No 2060 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow This bridge was built in 1757-8, to replace a ford, and was, it has been suggested, designed by John Adam. It was constructed to link Nether Pollok House with that part of its estate which lies to the south west. The house was constructed between 1747 and 1752. This shows the bridge from the north-west. The segmental arch is unusually flat for the period, but it is narrower than its abutments, a common feature in masonry arch bridges before the late 18th century. This is one of the few estate bridges surviving in the Glasgow area, and the finest 18th century bridge in the city. The structure is modest in scale, but sophisticated in design. Whoever designed it was thoroughly competent as both architect and engineer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
