Scope and Content Botanic Gardens Station, No 1057 Great Western Road, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, which was promoted by the Caledonian Railway to link its London Road branch with Maryhill, and via the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway with the north bank of the Clyde, the Vale of Leven & Loch Lomond. This shows the station from the north-east, Botanic Gardens, side. This emphasises the Arts and Crafts aspects of its design, though its gilded onion domes can also be seen. It was designed by James Miller, architect as a showpiece for a high-profile location. The surface building seen here was linked to the platforms, in deep cutting, by covered stairways. The station closed in 1939, the line through it in 1964, and it was destroyed by fire in 1970. The station suffered from 1901 from competition from a frequent service of electric trams.
