Scope and Content View from east of interior of wash house, No 9 Alloway Place, Ayr, South Ayrshire Alloway Place contains a terrace of four houses, each three bays wide and two storeys high with central columned doorpieces. The terrace was begun in the early 19th century, but not completed until c.1845. The houses are named after Lord Alloway, who owned the land upon which they were built. This shows the wash house in the back garden of the house. A large copper boiler can be seen (right), and three sinks run under the windows. An 'Acme' patent mangle with variable pressure adjuster on top is fixed between two sinks, which rest on ceramic pedestals. A wooden duck board prevents the laundry maid from getting her feet and skirts wet. Wash-day, traditionally on Mondays, was a very busy day in the 19th-century house. Servants would wash the clothes in the boiler, then transfer them to a sink to be rinsed, putting them through the mangle to get rid of excess water. The clothes would be dried in the garden before being ironed with flats irons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
