Scope and Content Muirend Station, Glasgow This station was opened in 1903 by the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway, which was promoted by the Caledonian Railway to link the company's Lanarkshire lines with Ardrossan, Irvine & Kilbirnie, and, hopefully, with Ayr. An outer suburban service operated as far as Uplawmoor until 1963. This shows the station from the south. Like the stations on the Cathcart Circle it has an island platform, but being on a less restricted site both platform and station building are wider. The awnings are flat-roofed, while those on Cathcart Circle have the same pitch as the roof. This is the only Lanarkshire & Ayrshire station still retaining its original building, which has 'Glasgow Style' detailing. The outer suburban service has since electrification in 1963 terminated at Neilston. The eastern section of the railway, to Newton via Burnside, still has a passenger service.
