Scope and Content McGeoch's Building (Ironmongery Warehouse), No 28 West Campbell Street, Glasgow This warehouse was built in 1905 for William McGeoch & Co, wholesale ironmongers, who had previously had premises in Morrison's Court, 108 Argyle Street. The firm were manufacturers of lamp fittings, but not in Glasgow. This warehouse was designed by J J Burnet, one of Glasgow's leading architects. This shows the frontage to Cadogan Street, faced with red sandstone. The architectural treatment is influenced by American models, and is intended to reflect the taste and modernity of the goods being sold within. To the left is an earlier warehouse block, probably of the 1870s. The building was empty in 1969 and demolished in 1970, apparently targeted by developers who seemed intent on taking out as many high-quality city-centre buildings as possible. Had it survived a few years longer it would have been an excellent candidate for conversion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
