Scope and Content Waterloo Bridge, Haddington, East Lothian This fine single-span masonry bridge was built in 1815-7 to carry the main road south from Haddington over the river Tyne. It was constructed with stone from the Colstoun estate, a short distance to the south. This shows the bridge from the north-west. The flatness of the arch is notable, and suggests the influence of Thomas Telford, or perhaps of John Rennie, who was a native of East Lothian. It may have been designed by Robert Stevenson, engineer. This bridge was built at a time when roads in central Scotland were being upgraded to make both stagecoach and private coach travel quicker and more comfortable. The use of stone from Colstoun suggests that the owner of the estate may have had a hand in the commissioning of this bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
