Scope and Content View of entrance gates to Carrick House, Carrick Avenue, Ayr, South Ayrshire Carrick House, a fine Victorian mansion with a huge music room, built c.1844. It was extended in the 1890s, when fine interior decoration was carried out by John Archibald Campbell (died 1909), and in 1919 by A Stevenson. The house was demolished c.1979, and the site used for the construction of sheltered housing. This shows the main entrance gates which consist of a pair of cast iron gates hung from stone gate piers flanked by a rubble wall. The gates are finely cast in a swirling design which incorporates the initial 'A' of the owner, Thomas Glen Arthur, in paired roundels. These grand gates set the tone of the finely decorated house they enclose. They would be the first part of the property the visitor or passer-by would see, and were intended to reflect the wealth and taste of the owner. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
