Scope and Content Main Street Station, Glasgow Main Street Gorbals station was opened by CGU in 1872 and closed in 1900 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway, though it was on the City of Glasgow Union Railway. It was replaced by the adjacent Eglinton Street Station. Rather confusingly, the railway line for both stations ran adjacent to what is now Cumberland Street. Eglinton Street Station was later renamed Cumberland Street. This shows the entrance to the station from Cumberland Street. Passages and stairs led from this building to all four platforms. The steel parapet and substructure of the main city-bound platform can be seen to the right, bracketed from the side of the bridge carrying the track. The passenger services on this line ended in 1966, when St Enoch Station was closed, though this station had been closed some time earlier, and this entrance had not been used for many years. The platform buildings were demolished in 1969, though this building still survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
