Scope and Content Buchanan Street Station Tunnel, Glasgow This tunnel is on a branch line from the original Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway to a new Glasgow terminus at the top of Buchanan Street. The line was promoted by the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, which had become part of the Caledonian Railway when it was opened in 1849. This shows the western entrance to the tunnel, with to the left a relieving arch to take the thrust of the upper part of the retaining wall away from the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway's Queen Street Tunnel, only a few feet below the track-bed seen here. This most elegant piece of civil engineering design has now been obscured by the dumping of spoil to allow building over the former cutting, though the masonry is probably still there. Buchanan Street Station was closed in 1966 and the track lifted soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
