Scope and Content Waterworks, Tay Street, Perth, Perth & Kinross This works was built in 1832 with local headmaster Adam Anderson acting as both architect and engineer. It had a steam pumping engine in a circular engine-house, with a domed cast-iron cistern on the roof, from which water was distributed round the town by gravity. This shows the works from the north-east, with the original works to the rear. Note the ornamental top to the chimney. The rectangular building in the foreground was built in 1904 to house a triple-expansion steam pumping engine by Douglas & Grant of Kirkcaldy. The Douglas & Grant engine was a standby to diesel pumps from 1930, and was completely superseded by electric pumps in the 1960s. The engine and house were demolished in 1972, when the old buildings were converted to a visitor centre by Morris & Steedman, architects. It is now an art gallery.
