Scope and Content Wellpark Brewery, No 161 Duke Street, Glasgow This brewery is said to have been founded in about 1556 by the Tennent family. The firm of J & R Tennent built it up into the largest brewery in the west of Scotland by the late 19th century, and it was the only brewery operating in Glasgow by the 1960s. This shows part of the maltings surviving out of use in 1969, seen across the flat roof of a mid-20th century addition to the brewery. There are blocks of malt barns on either side of the pair of kilns, with in front of the kilns a malt deposit for resting the newly made malt before it was used for brewing. These maltings were probably built in the 1890s or early 1900s when there was substantial investment in the brewery, Tennents remained independent until 1963. After several rationalisations, it is one of only two large breweries operating in Scotland. These maltings went in the early 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
