Scope and Content Footbridge, Botanic Gardens, No 703 Great Western Road, Glasgow This bridge was built over the river Kelvin in 1892-3 by Glasgow Corporation after they had taken over the privately-owned Botanic Gardens in 1891. The bridge was constructed to link the Gardens with the wooded north bank of the Kelvin, which the Corporation laid out as a park. This shows the bridge from the north. It has three plate-girder spans, and the ornate cast iron railings seen here. The girders are gracefully curved to give the slightly humped effect seen here. The Botanic Gardens were removed to this site from Sauchiehall Street in 1839-42. In 1873 the Kibble Palace, built for John Kibble at Coulport, was re-built here on a larger scale, and used as a concert hall. The Corporation took over the Gardens when they were in financial difficulties. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
