Scope and Content Belmont Bridge, Belmont Street, Glasgow This bridge was built in 1870 to carry Belmont Street over the river Kelvin, Belmont Street, including both bridges, was built to open up an area to the north of the Kelvin for residential development. It may have been designed by Bell & Miller, engineers. This shows the bridge from the west, with its tall single semi-elliptical masonry span. The stepped parapet shows that the carriageway is on a slope. This photograph was taken from the site of the North Woodside Flint Mill, and the rubble in the foreground came from its demolition. Before the surrounding area was developed for housing there was fairly extensive mining of shallow seams of coal using drift mines driven into the banks of the river. These shallow workings have caused subsidence in the area, requiring the demolition of several buildings. This bridge is not affected. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
