Scope and Content Bridge, Kelvin Way, Glasgow This bridge was built in 1913-4, replacing an iron truss bridge built in the 1880s. The new bridge was designed by A B McDonald, the City Engineer. It was designed to have bronze sculptures on pedestals at each corner, by Paul Raphael Montford, but because of the war these were not put in place until about 1920. This shows the single segmental span of the bridge from the south-west. It is faced with red sandstone, and has granite parapets. The sculptured groups can be seen. These represent Peace and War. Progress and Prosperity, Navigation and Shipbuilding and Commerce and Industry. The carriageway now known as Kelvin Way was formed to replace an earlier route through Kelvingrove Park from Kelvingrove Street across the Prince of Wales Bridge to University Avenue, completed in 1895. Kelvin Way was probably designed to take an electric tramway, never installed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
