Scope and Content Railway Bridge, Glasgow This bridge over the river Kelvin was opened in 1896 by the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, a line promoted to link its Glasgow Central Railway, an underground route through central Glasgow, with the industries on the north bank of the Clyde, and of the Vale of Leven, and with Loch Lomond. This shows the bridge from the south west. As can be seen it is a three-span plate girder, with the western piers founded on a ridge of hard rock that served as a weir for both the Scotstoun Mills (in the background) and the Bishop Mills. This railway closed to passengers in 1964, though the coal depot at Partick Central station remained open until the 1970s. This bridge was still used by coal trains, which had to be shunted back into the station. The bridge is still in existence, though almost obscured by the growth of vegetation.
