Scope and Content Cathcart Mill (Snuff & Cardboard Mill), Nos 23-5 Netherlee Road, Glasgow This mill is on the site of a medieval mill driven by the White Cart Water, and serving the village and estate of Cathcart. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, still as a meal mill, and this mill was converted into a cardboard mill by Solomon Lindsay of Penicuik in 1812, Snuff-making was added in 1814. This shows the mill from Netherlee Bridge, looking east. The former meal mill is on the left. The wing on the right is a 19th century addition for the cardboard mill. There were two waterwheels, between the two buildings. The snuff mill was in the gabled section of the old mill, on the left. This mill closed in the 1920s, and was gutted. It was converted into a garage for a house built on an adjacent site. By the mid-1970s it had become almost derelict, and it was almost completely rebuilt by unemployed people working on the Community Programme. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
