Scope and Content Electricity Sub-station, Nos 42-4 Haggs Road, Glasgow This sub-station was built in 1908 for the Glasgow Corporation Electricity Department, and like others of its generation was designed to convert high-voltage alternating current (AC) into the low-voltage direct current (DC) supplied to consumers, using rotary converters. This shows the station from the west. As it was built in a growing residential area it was given a masonry cladding, and the front was designed to look like a large suburban villa. It is the only sub-station in Glasgow so designed. In about 1930 the station was adapted to accommodate transformers. Rotary converters are devices with, in this case, an alternating current motor driving a direct current generator. These required regular maintenance, so the sub-station has fitted with an overhead crane. Transformers do not need such regular care. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
