Scope and Content View of St Martin's Cross from the west, Iona, Argyll and Bute Wooden crosses were used in the time of Columba, founder of the monastery on Iona in 563 AD. By the 8th century the monastery had become an important artistic centre with wealthy patrons, and the likely home of The Book of Kells. By the mid-8th century, free-standing high crosses were being produced. This ringed cross is carved from a single slab of stone. In the centre of the west face of the cross-head, there is the Virgin and Child. Below, Daniel is flanked by lions. In the panel below, Abraham is ready to sacrifice Isaac. Next comes David playing the harp, followed by, possibly, David and Saul. The arms of the cross are decorated with animals. The cross still stands in its original position.
