Scope and Content Main Bedroom, Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire This photograph of the main bedroom of Landale, Troon, was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, a large Edwardian villa, was designed by the architect, Balfour Abercrombie, and built c.1908. The room, with a simple electric light fitting at the window, has a pretty floral paper border running below the cornice and an armchair with a floral pattered cover and matching curtains. The white fitted wardrobe is characteristic of Edwardian bedrooms. In 1910 electric lighting in private households was still something of a novelty, particularly in rural areas. When electric light fittings were initially installed in bedrooms, they were fitted at the window in order to mimic the effect of natural light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
