Scope and Content Drawing Room, Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire Landale, a large Edwardian villa designed by the architect, Balfour Abercrombie, was built c.1908 overlooking the coast at Troon. The drawing room was photographed in 1909 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has light coloured walls divided into sections by moulded panelling, and a bay window with views over the croquet lawn. The armchairs have floral covers whose pattern is reflected in the shades of the oil lamps on the side table and piano. Electric lighting increased in popularity throughout the Edwardian era, but by 1910 less than five per cent of households had electricity. Although this drawing room has electric wall lights, it still relied on oil lamps as the main source of light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
