Scope and Content Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire Landale, a large Edwardian villa designed c.1908 by the architect, Balfour Abercrombie, was built in a magnificent setting overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The exterior was photographed in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house has a steeply pitched roof, and tile-hung eaves. The first-floor balcony was designed to take full advantage of the sea views, and created a colonnaded shelter below facing onto the croquet and tennis lawn. Troon is now synonymous with golf, but it was first and foremost a railway town when, in 1812, the Duke of Portland opened the first railroad in Scotland, a track which brought coal from his collieries in Kilmarnock to Troon for shipment to Ireland.
