Scope and Content Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire Landale, a large Edwardian villa built c.1908 by the architect, Balfour Abercrombie, stands in a splendid setting overlooking the Ayrshire coast. This photograph of the exterior was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This white harled house, with tall chimneys and tile-hung eaves, was designed to take full advantage of the magnificent sea views from its first-floor windows. The balcony provides a colonnaded shelter below for watching croquet on the lawn. Troon lies on the coast of Firth of Clyde about 48 km south-west of Glasgow. Its wide sandy beaches, golf links and stunning views overlooking the Isle of Arran made it a fashionable spot for wealthy Edwardians to build large seaside homes.
