Scope and Content Main Entrance, Landale, Craigend Road, Troon, South Ayrshire This photograph of the main entrance to Landale, Troon, was taken in 1909 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, a large Edwardian villa designed by the architect, Balfour Abercrombie, was built c.1908. This unusual Gothic-style doorway, at the side of the house, has solid wooden outer doors, and an inner glass-paned door to allow light into the lounge hall. The electric doorbell (left) was beginning to become a regular feature of Edwardian houses. The Gothic style of architecture was prevalent in Western Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries, and was characterised by pointed arches. The style was revived in the Victorian era when it was applied to doors and window details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
