Scope and Content Drawing Room, The Homestead (now Malcolm Sargent House), No 22 Links Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Homestead, a large Edwardian villa, was designed by the Ayrshire architect, James A Morris, in a splendid site overlooking the golf links. This photograph of the first-floor drawing room was taken in 1903 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room is designed in the height of Edwardian fashion in a Neo-Georgian style, with most of the detail concentrated in the elaborately embossed frieze. The glazed built-in display cabinets are free of any mouldings, and are typical of the period. In Edwardian houses built-in furniture was popular in smaller rooms for its economic use of space. In dining and drawing rooms wall recesses frequently had adjustable shelves covered by glass doors, or built-in cupboards with open shelves for ornaments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
