Scope and Content Entrance Hall, The Homestead (now Malcolm Sargent House), No 22 Links Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Homestead, a large Edwardian villa, was designed by the Ayrshire architect, James A Morris, for a wealthy client. This photograph of the entrance hall was taken in 1903 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The white-painted hallway has linoleum tiles in the outer area, and a fitted carpet in the inner hall. The walls are panelled, with a stylised frieze of plants and fruit above. The radiator (left) is contained within a stylish wooden casing. It is interesting to note that the household had a gong (left) in the outer hall, a rather pretentious reference to the lifestyle of a large country house where the gong was beaten, rather like a drum, in order to summon the family and guests to meals.
