Scope and Content Principal Bedroom, The Homestead (now Malcolm Sargent House), No 22 Links Road, Prestwick, South Ayrshire The Homestead, a large, harled Edwardian villa, was designed by the Ayrshire architect, James A Morris. All the principal rooms were contained on the first floor, including this main bedroom, photographed in 1903 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The bedroom has pretty floral wallpaper and a carpet with a matching design. The unit over the fireplace, with glazed wooden cupboards and open shelves for ornaments, is typical of the period, as is the modest pendant electric light fitting at the window. Although electric lighting became popular in the Edwardian era, by 1910 less than five per cent of households had electricity. In bedrooms small pendant lights with cut-glass shades were common, placed at the window to mimic the effect of natural light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
