Scope and Content Tailoring Workshops, No 42 Spean Street, Glasgow This workshop was built in 1913-22 for Wallace, Scott & Co Ltd to designs by J J Burnet, architect. It was surrounded by extensive landscaped grounds, and was in every sense a model factory. It made garments for the fashionable London market with the brand name 'Dexter'. This shows the workshop from the north, with the original building of 1913-22 on the right. The block on the left was added for the South of Scotland Electricity Board, who took over the site in the late-1950s. The regularly-planted trees are part of the original designed landscape. As completed in 1922 works was known as a 'tailoring institute'. Tennis courts, a bowling green and other facilities were provided for workers. Much of the site has been built over. It still houses the offices of Scottish Power, successors to the South of Scotland Electricity Board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
