Scope and Content Mills No 2 & 3, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire This village was founded in 1784 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright to spin cotton. Between 1799 and the late 1820s it was run by Robert Owen and partners, and then by the Walker Brothers until 1881, when it was bought by Birkmyre & Somerville, and later by the Gourock Ropework Co. This shows the passage on the river side of the mills, with the rear walls of Mills No 2 and 3 to the left, and the waterhouses on the right, These were built on top of an arched tunnel taking the tailraces of the waterwheels which powered the mills to an outfall below Mill No 1. This tunnel and the waterhouses above were built by Robert Owen and his partners, probably in about 1809, when they brought Mill No 4 into use for spinning. Taking the tailraces to the lowest possible point increased the power the waterwheels could deliver. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
