Scope and Content Engineer's Shop & Dye Works, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire This village was founded in 1784 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright to spin cotton. Between 1799 and the late 1820s it was run by Robert Owen and partners, and then by the Walker Brothers until 1881, when it was bought by Birkmyre & Somerville, and later by the Gourock Ropework Co. This shows two buildings constructed by Robert Owen and his partners to free Mill No 4 for spinning. On the right is the mechanics' shop, used to make and maintain the mill machinery, and on the left the iron and brass foundry which made parts for the mechanics. Latterly it was a dye works. Dale employed a standing workforce of building tradesmen who built the four mills and all the associated housing. Mill No 4 was built in advance of need, and housed until about 1809 the workshops, and the poor-law apprentice children who worked in the mills, and the school where they were educated.
