Scope and Content Marischal College Courtroom, University of Aberdeen, Broad Street, Aberdeen Marischal College courtroom, designed by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie for the Court of Aberdeen University, was part of Mackenzie's major extensions to the college which were completed in 1906. The room was photographed in 1906 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent room is lit by 'electroliers', electric chandeliers that were one of the new technologies of the time. The ceiling is decorated with 18 heraldic crests which record the history of the university since its foundation in 1495. The Court's functions were to administer the property and revenues of the university, to make appointments, and to fix fees. It also received representatives and reports from the Senate and General Council, and prescribed regulations for degree courses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
