Scope and Content View of Barns Street, Ayr, South Ayrshire Barns Street includes the earliest terrace in Ayr along its north side, built in the early 1800s. The similar terrace on the south side was built in the mid-19th century. All the houses are constructed of stone, varying between two and three bays in width, and conform to a uniform height. This shows the view along the street towards the Caledonian Hotel. A variety of masonry treatments are visible, including rustication, smooth ashlar stonework, painted harling and coursed rubble. The houses have smooth or moulded window margins, and columned or pilastered doorpieces on the later properties. The North side of Barns Street was the first to be built as a terrace in the early 1800s. Due to space restrictions, the developers were prevented from building large townhouses with their own gardens. The south side of the street was developed in the mid-19th century in a similar style.
