Scope and Content Marischal College Extension Building, University of Aberdeen, Broad Street, Aberdeen, from the south-west The Marischal College extension building, designed by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, was built for Aberdeen University during a period of expansion of the old Marischal College site. The Broad Street façade was photographed in 1906 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The façade, described as 'granite wedding cake', was designed in a Neo-Gothic style with much ornate detail and a lacework of innumerable spirelets, each topped with a gilt flag. In the centre of the façade is the arched main entrance to the college. Alexander Marshall Mackenzie (1843-1933) worked for David Bryce before setting up in practice in 1870. In the 1890s he became one of Aberdeen's outstanding architects, and the early 20th-century front to Marischal College is regarded as his masterpiece. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
