Scope and Content View from south-west of conservatory/entrance staircase, Castlecliffe, The Scores, St Andrews, Fife This large house which overlooks the sea, was built in 1869 to designs by architect David Bryce (1803-76). It is two-storeyed with a raised basement level, and is built from bull-faced ashlar stone with polished dressings. It is now used by the Economics department of the University of St Andrews. This shows the wood and glass conservatory on its stone base which serves as an impressive stepped entrance to the house. Small windows in the stonework light basement rooms below the stairs. Some of the panes of glass in their pointed frames feature etched and painted foliate patterns. The conservatory was a common feature in large 19th-century homes. It would be used for cultivating exotic plants and for taking tea in. The Victorians enjoyed studying the natural world, and a conservatory suggested that the owners had an appreciation and knowledge of plant life. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
