Scope and Content Detail of the west wall of the drawing room in Castlecliffe, The Scores, St Andrews, Fife This large house, which overlooks the sea, was built in 1869 to designs by architect David Bryce (1803-76). It is two-storeyed with a raised basement level, and is built from bull-faced ashlar stone with polished dressings. It is currently used by the Economics department of the University of St Andrews. This shows the drawing room undergoing restoration work. The fine door surround and plasterwork cornice are crisply modelled and painted white. The main doorway, which is flanked by two smaller ones, gives access to a later bay extension. The drawing room would have been used after dinner for drinks, music and playing cards. The ladies would 'withdraw' here first, to be joined by the gentlemen after they had finished their port and cigars in the dining room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
