Scope and Content Detail of east wall in drawing room of Castlecliffe, The Scores, St Andrews, Fife This large house, which overlooks the sea, was built in 1869 to designs by architect David Bryce (1803-76). It is two-storeyed with a raised basement level, and is built from bull-faced ashlar stone with polished dressings. It is currently used by the Economics department of the University of St Andrews. This shows a mirror set into a carved niche in the wall of the drawing room. A plasterwork cornice above continues the decorative effect. The mirror creates the illusion that the room is even bigger than it actually is. The drawing room was usually the most lavishly decorated room in a 19th-century house as it was where guests would gather, or 'withdraw' after dinner. The decoration of the room expressed the owner's taste and wealth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
